Hyderabad: A sub-inspector of Maripeda police station in Mahabubabad district, Telangana, was arrested on charges of attempting to rape a probationary woman sub-inspector of the Dalit community. The incident took place late on Monday in an isolated area in the Maripeda area.
Ironically, on Tuesday morning, the sub-inspector, P. Srinivasa Reddy, took part in a press meet held by the Mahabubabad superintendent of police regarding the seizing of huge quantities of jaggery. Srinivasa was even rewarded by the SP during the press meet. However, hours later, he was placed under suspension and was reportedly arrested.
According to reports, the victim had been recently recruited to the police force and was allotted the Warangal range. She was attached to the Maripeda police station on probation. Late on Monday, Srinivasa took her to an isolated area and tried to rape her. He assaulted her when she resisted.
She managed to free herself from his grasp and escape. On Tuesday, the victim along with her family members lodged a complaint with Warangal police commissioner Tarun Joshi who ordered an inquiry. A case was registered against Srinivasa.
The accused sub-inspector went into hiding but the police nabbed him. It has been learned that he is being questioned at a secret location and will be produced before the court anytime. Meanwhile, on Tuesday evening, scores of Congress women activists staged a protest at the Telangana DGP office demanding strict action and severe punishment against Srinivasa.
