Hyderabad: Telangana has emerged as the top-performing state in India in recovering stolen and missing mobile phones, achieving an impressive 1,00,020 recoveries through the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) Portal as of October 16.

Despite launching the portal later than other pilot states, Telangana has set a national benchmark in mobile device recovery.

District-wise recovery highlights

The highest recovery counts were recorded in the following districts and police commissionerates:

Hyderabad Commissionerate: 84,003 devices blocked; 45,261 traceability reports; 14,965 devices traced and unblocked

Warangal Commissionerate: 13,360 devices blocked; 8,382 traceability reports; 5,564 devices traced and unblocked

Kamareddy (Multi Zone-I): 9,698 devices blocked; 5,869 traceability reports; 3,860 devices traced and unblocked

Suryapet (Multi Zone-II): 5,141 devices blocked; 3,298 traceability reports; 2,267 devices traced and unblocked

CEIR Portal: Fighting mobile theft and counterfeits

The CEIR portal, developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), is designed to curb mobile theft and the circulation of counterfeit devices. CID Telangana is the nodal agency responsible for implementing the system across the state, and it is now operational in all 780 police stations.

While the portal was first launched in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Delhi, and North Eastern States on September 5, 2022, Telangana introduced it on April 19 2023, almost eight months later. Despite this delayed start, the state has outperformed all others in device recovery.

Key initiatives behind Telangana’s success

Proactive Field Efforts: Police personnel across the state have worked diligently to register cases on the CEIR portal, monitor traceability reports daily, contact individuals in possession of lost or stolen devices, and ensure their return to rightful owners.

Enhanced Citizen Access: Telangana Police, in collaboration with DoT, has integrated the CEIR portal with the TG Police Citizen Portal, allowing citizens to report lost or stolen devices online at www.tspolice.gov.in or directly at www.ceir.gov.in.

Citizen-Centric Approach: The initiative has received positive feedback from citizens whose mobile phones were successfully recovered, highlighting the effectiveness of the portal in safeguarding personal property.

Recognition of CID efforts

Additional Director General, CID Telangana Charu Sinha lauded the efforts of CID officials and their close coordination with DoT representatives, including DDG Security, Director Security, and JTO Security, for achieving this significant milestone.
