New Delhi: Following the tragic crash of an Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick that claimed 241 lives, the airline has decided to discontinue the use of flight number ‘171’ as a mark of respect and in line with global aviation practice.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner operating Flight AI 171 went down shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad on Thursday, leading to one of the deadliest aviation disasters involving an Indian carrier in recent years. All passengers and crew onboard were killed.
According to sources, the Ahmedabad–London Gatwick route will now operate under a new flight number, AI 159, starting June 17. The change was made in the airline's booking systems on Friday.
In a parallel move, Air India Express, the low-cost arm of the national carrier, has also decided to drop the use of its own flight number IX 171.
“Retiring the flight number is both a symbolic and respectful gesture. It helps distance the future operations from the tragedy while honouring the lives lost,” said an airline official familiar with the development.
Aviation norms followed
It is standard practice in the aviation industry to withdraw flight numbers associated with fatal crashes. This not only avoids distress for future passengers but also serves as a sign of mourning and tribute.
This is not the first time such a decision has been made by the airline. In 2020, after the Air India Express crash in Kozhikode that killed 21 people, the flight number involved in that incident was also permanently retired.
Investigation underway
While the exact cause of the Ahmedabad crash is still under investigation, officials from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and international aviation safety agencies have arrived at the crash site. Preliminary findings are expected to be shared with the public in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Air India has assured full cooperation with authorities and pledged support to the families of the deceased, including compensation and counselling services.
