Centre proposes mandatory airbag for front-seat passenger

Hyderabad: The Union Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MoRTH) on 29 December has proposed to make airbags mandatory for passengers sitting in the front seat for the newer models of four-wheelers from 1 April 2021 and for existing models from 1 June 2021.

The ministry has put out a draft notification with respect to the dual front airbags for public consultation.

"In a significant measure to boost passenger safety, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways proposes to make it mandatory that an airbag be provided for the passenger seated at the front of a vehicle, next to the driver," said MoRT.

A draft notification No. GSR 797 (E) dated 28 December 2020 to this effect has been published on the ministry's website.

For the proposal, the government is inviting comments/suggestions from all stakeholders at comments-morth@gov.in within 30 days from the date of notification.
