Vijayawada: In a major development in the Andhra Pradesh liquor scam case, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has issued notices to retired IAS officer Dr Rajat Bhargava, asking him to appear for questioning.
Key officer under SIT scanner
Dr Bhargava, who served as special chief secretary of the Excise Department during the previous YSRCP government, has been directed to appear before SIT officials in Vijayawada on Friday. He retired a few months ago after holding several crucial portfolios, including Excise, Industries and Finance.
Focus on liquor procurement and pricing irregularities
The SIT is investigating large-scale irregularities in liquor procurement, distribution and pricing decisions taken during his tenure. Sources indicate that investigators are examining whether policies were framed to benefit private liquor syndicates at the cost of public revenue.
Previous arrests and interrogations
The SIT has already questioned many officials and arrested a few in connection with the scam, which allegedly took place during the YSRCP regime. The questioning of Dr Bhargava is expected to focus on his role in administrative decisions that may have facilitated the irregularities.
Conspiracy with private syndicates is alleged
Officials believe that a nexus between private liquor syndicates and government decision-makers played a key role in the scam. The SIT aims to gather details on possible collusion and financial manipulations during the liquor procurement and distribution process.
Further investigations are underway, and more officials are likely to be summoned in the coming days as the probe progresses.
