CENSUS 2027: House-Listing operations to begin from April 1st to September 30th, 2026

Hyderabad: Following a directive from the central government, the government of Telangana has officially set the timeline for the commencement of Census 2027 operations. According to G.O.Ms.No. 7, issued on January 22, 2026, by the General Administration (Accommodation-A) Department, the house-listing phase of the national census will be carried out between April 1, 2026, and September 30, 2026.

Key Operations and Notification

The state order facilitates the republication of the Gazette of India notification in the Telangana State Gazette. As per the declaration by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Registrar General of India, these house-listing operations will be conducted across all states and union territories.

The order highlights two primary methods for data collection:

House-to-House Operations: This standard phase will take place over a period of thirty days, as specified by each individual State and Union Territory within the April-to-September window.

Self-Enumeration Option: In a modern shift for the 2027 census, citizens will have the option for self-enumeration. This process is scheduled to be conducted during a fifteen-day period immediately preceding the start of the thirty-day house-to-house listing operations.

Administrative Directives

The government order, signed by chief secretary to government K Ramakrishna Rao, has been circulated to all major administrative heads, including district collectors, department heads, and commissioners of major municipal corporations such as GHMC, GWMC, Nizamabad, and Karimnagar to ensure seamless execution.

The Director of Census Operations and the Director of Economics & Statistics have been tasked with overseeing the technical and logistical aspects of the process within Telangana. This official notification supersedes previous declarations and confirms that the groundwork for the 2027 Census is now formally underway.
