CM Revanth, DGP Reddy, others meet Amit Shah; seek raising strength of IPS officers to 105
New Delhi: Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, along with senior Indian Police Service officers, met Union Home Minister Amit Shah and urged him to raise the strength of IPS officers from 83 to 105.
This meeting of the CM, along with senior officials, raised a lot of eyebrows in Telangana.
Besides CM Revanth Reddy, V Seshadri, principal secretary to the CM, B Shivdhar Reddy, director general of Police (DGP), Vijay Kumar, intelligence additional DGP, and B Sumathi, SIB IGP were part of the delegation that met Shah.
The Chief Minister cited the rapid expansion of Hyderabad and the emergence of complex security challenges as the primary drivers for this request.
Addressing a "Delayed" Cadre Review
Chief Minister Reddy pointed out a significant gap in the administrative updates for the state’s police force. While the first cadre review post-Telangana’s formation occurred in 2016, the subsequent review scheduled for 2021 was delayed until 2025. "Even after the 2025 review, only seven additional IPS officers were allocated to the state," the CM informed the Home Minister, emphasizing that the current numbers are insufficient for the state's growing needs.
To rectify this, Reddy requested that the third cadre review be conducted strictly on schedule in 2026.
"Future City" & Cybercrime
The Chief Minister highlighted that Telangana is at a critical juncture of urban and administrative expansion. Key reasons for the requested increase in IPS strength include:
Administrative Reorganization: The recent restructuring of the Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Malkajgiri Police Commissionerates.
The "Future City" Project: The proposed establishment of a dedicated Commissionerate for the upcoming "Future City" to manage its unique security and logistical demands.
Emerging Threats: A rising need for senior leadership to tackle cybercrime, drug trafficking, and white-collar offenses.
Demographic Growth: The staggering population boom in the Greater Hyderabad region.
Maoist surrenders and rehabilitation
The meeting also touched upon internal security, specifically the decline of Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) in the region. CM Revanth Reddy shared encouraging statistics regarding the state's policing success over the last two years:
Mass Surrenders: A total of 591 Maoists have laid down their arms to join the mainstream.
Top Leadership Returns: Several senior Maoist leaders have recently surrendered, choosing a path of peace over conflict.
Government Support: The CM assured the Home Minister that the state is providing comprehensive compensation and rehabilitation packages to those who surrender, in accordance with established rules.
Appeal for Backward Region Development
Beyond security, the Chief Minister sought the Centre’s intervention in the socio-economic development of the state. He formally requested financial support for infrastructure and developmental projects in Telangana’s backward regions to ensure balanced growth across the state.
