Congress questions ceasefire announcement by Trump, demands PM Modi’s clarification

New Delhi: Congress senior leader Sachin Pilot says that people of the country need to know the details of the ceasefire

New Delhi: “Why was the ceasefire announcement made first by U.S. President Donald Trump?” senior Congress leader and Working Committee member Sachin Pilot questioned at a press conference.

The nature and content of President Trump’s announcement have raised several concerns, and the Government of India must clarify its position, he said.

Pilot asked, “What are the terms and conditions of the ceasefire reached between India and Pakistan?”

Kashmir Issue

Addressing social media discussions on Kashmir, Pilot questioned, “Why is Kashmir being discussed by the U.S.? Kashmir is a bilateral issue between India and Pakistan. We do not want any third-party mediation.”

Pakistan's Credibility Questioned

Pilot added, “What is the guarantee that such attacks will not take place again, even after the ceasefire? The political and military systems in Pakistan do not function like in India. Pakistan lacks credibility.”

He further pointed out that “the question of Pakistan’s credibility arose immediately after the ceasefire announcement, as they fired at Indian posts shortly thereafter. How is one supposed to trust Pakistan?”

Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK)

Pilot also referred to the unanimous 1994 resolution of the Indian Parliament to reclaim Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK), stating that the time had come to reaffirm the commitment made then—an initiative supported by every party and MP at the time.

PM Modi Must Address Parliament

Pilot said, “We urge Prime Minister Modi to convene a special session of Parliament and speak directly to the people about the ceasefire. He could not attend the last two all-party meetings, but now he must address Parliament and provide clarity.”

He emphasized that the Opposition had set aside political differences and stood firmly with the government in managing the crisis.

Key Questions Raised by the Opposition:

Why did the U.S. Vice President initially say the conflict was not their concern, only for President Trump to later announce a ceasefire?

Why did the International Monetary Fund grant a $1 billion loan to Pakistan just a day before the ceasefire announcement?
