‘Tourism can drive economic transformation’: Jupally Krishna Rao

Tourism and Culture Minister Jupally Krishna Rao highlighted Telangana’s cultural depth and tourism potential during a panel discussion titled ‘Experience Telangana: Heritage, Culture and Future-Ready Tourism.’

Addressing the gathering, the Minister thanked the Chief Minister for convening the summit with the larger goal of steering Telangana towards a $3 trillion economy by 2047.

He said the vision was not limited to growth in numbers but aimed at inclusive welfare and economic empowerment.

He termed tourism as a key engine of economic growth and employment, pointing out that several countries with limited natural resources had transformed their economies by prioritising tourism. He noted that Telangana, despite having abundant heritage and natural assets, had remained underutilised in this sector for long.

Rich heritage, untapped potential

The Minister said Telangana boasts historic forts, ancient temples, heritage monuments, scenic landscapes, vibrant festivals, handlooms and crafts, yet public awareness remained limited. He urged citizens to explore and promote local tourism.

He also highlighted the Free Bus Travel Scheme for Women, stating that it enabled women to travel across districts, explore tourist destinations and participate in cultural life.

Infrastructure, jobs and self-employment in focus

Krishna Rao also stressed the need to strengthen tourism infrastructure, including accommodation across all price segments and roadside amenities for multi-day travel.

He said increased private investment would open up large-scale employment and self-employment opportunities for youth.

Tracing Telangana’s legacy from the Shatavahana and Kakatiya periods to the Qutub Shahi era, he highlighted iconic monuments such as Kakatiya Kala Thoranam and Qutub Shahi Tombs. He also referred to Telangana’s literary and ethical heritage, citing poet Pothana as a symbol of the State’s cultural values.

Tourism to contribute 10% to GSDP by 2047

The Minister announced that the government aims to raise the tourism sector’s contribution to 10 per cent of Telangana’s Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) by 2047.

The newly introduced tourism policy offers a wide range of incentives to attract private players.

He added that several government properties were being converted into revenue-generating tourism assets, while the official Telangana Tourism website now serves as a one-stop digital platform for visitors.

Chief Secretary Rama Krishna Rao, Special Chief Secretary for IT and Industries Jayesh Ranjan, Telangana Tourism Managing Director Kranthi Valluru, and senior officials were present.
