Hyderabad: The Central government on 31 March extended the deadline to link Aadhaar and PAN to 30 June 2021.

"In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, certain time limits specified under the various tax and Benami laws have been extended by the Taxation and Other Laws (Relaxation and Amendment of Certain Provisions) Act, 2020 and subsequent notifications issued under this Act. The extended last date for intimating the Aadhaar number under the Income Tax Act, 1961 for the purposes of linking Aadhaar with PAN is 31 March 2021," said the Centre.

If a person fails to link PAN with Aadhaar by the last date then he or she will have to face a penalty of Rs. 10,000. Apart from that, their PAN card, too, may become inoperative.

Though many users have linked their PAN with Aadhar they are unsure whether they have been linked. Below are the steps to check whether it has been linked:

Checking status on the official website

Go to any Internet browser of your choice and visit the official website of the Income Tax department at www.incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in.

On the homepage, you will see the option 'Link Aadhaar' under the Quick Links section.

Click on the option. A new window will open. On the page, you will see an option that reads "Click here to view the status if you have already submitted link Aadhar request". Clicking on this option will display your Aadhar-PAN link status.

In case it shows a failure, then you can fill the form on the same page to link PAN with Aadhaar.

Checking the status through SMS:

Type the 12-digit Aadhaar number followed by space and the 10-digit PAN number from your registered mobile number.

Send the message to 567678 or 56161.

You will receive the status in reply.
