IMD forecasts heavy rains, thunderstorms in Andhra Pradesh for next 4 days

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh is set to witness heavy rains and thunderstorm activity over the next four days, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast.

Low pressure in the Bay of Bengal

According to the Indian Meteorological Department, Amaravati, the low-pressure area over the Northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas of West Bengal-north Odisha lay over coastal areas of Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and northwest Bay of Bengal on September 23. The associated cyclonic circulation now extends up to 7.6 km above the mean sea level.

The trough now runs from the cyclonic circulation associated with the low-pressure area over coastal areas of Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and northwest Bay of Bengal to Telangana across Odisha and lies between 1.5 and 3.1 km above mean sea level.

More low-pressure areas in formation

Another trough runs from the upper air cyclonic circulation associated with the low pressure area over coastal areas of Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and northwest Bay of Bengal to south Maharashtra coast across Odisha, south Chhattisgarh, Telangana, north interior Karnataka between 4.5 & 5.8 km above mean sea level.

Another fresh low-pressure area is likely to form over the east-central and adjoining north Bay of Bengal around September 25. Moving west-northwestwards, it is very likely to become a depression over the northwest and adjoining west-central Bay of Bengal off the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts around September 26. It is very likely to cross the South Odisha-North Andhra Pradesh coasts around September 27.

Heavy rain alert

Under its influence, heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places in North Coastal Andhra Pradesh (NCAP) and Yanam for the next five days. Thunderstorms with lightning are also expected across NCAP, Yanam, South Coastal Andhra Pradesh (SCAP) and Rayalaseema.

Strong surface winds of 40–50 kmph are likely at isolated places in NCAP and Yanam and SCAP, while Rayalaseema may experience winds of 30–40 kmph.
