New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the media on Monday at the Parliament complex before the commencement of the Monsoon Session of 2025, extending a warm welcome to all participants.

Monsoon’s effect on rural economy

He described the monsoon season as a symbol of innovation and renewal and noted that the current weather conditions across India are progressing positively, offering favourable prospects for agriculture.

He highlighted the critical role rainfall plays in supporting not just the rural economy, but the broader economic framework and financial well-being of every household. The prime minister pointed out that water reservoir levels this year are three times higher than the average over the past decade—an encouraging sign for India’s economic trajectory.

Astronaut Subhanshu Shukla

Describing the Parliament’s Monsoon Session as a moment of national pride, PM Modi highlighted India’s recent achievement by astronaut Subhanshu Shukla of unfurling the national flag at the International Space Station.

He called it a historic and emotional moment that has ignited enthusiasm for science, technology and innovation among citizens. He stressed that this achievement is being celebrated by both Houses of the Parliament and by people across the country and expressed hope that it will inspire future advancements in India’s space exploration journey.

Operation Sindoor

Continuing on the theme of national achievements, the prime minister termed this session a celebration of India’s growing strength.

He spoke about the success of Operation Sindoor, where India’s armed forces completed their objectives within 22 minutes, successfully neutralising high-value targets. He emphasised the world’s increasing recognition of India’s indigenous defence capabilities, adding that global leaders have shown admiration for India’s homegrown military equipment.

PM Modi stated that as Parliament comes together in appreciation of this success, it will serve to energise the nation and further boost innovation, research and employment in the defence sector.

‘Peace and progress are advancing in the country’

He reflected on the transformation underway in India, noting that peace and progress are advancing hand in hand.

Stating that while the nation had long endured violence stemming from terrorism and Naxalism since independence, he observed that the geographical presence of such threats is now rapidly declining.

Security forces, he said, are making accelerated efforts to eliminate these threats entirely.

PM Modi proudly declared that many districts previously affected by Naxal violence have now emerged into zones of growth and development. He highlighted this as a testament to the triumph of the Constitution over the gun and noted the visible transformation of former Red Corridor regions into ‘Green Growth Zones.’

The prime minister emphasised that these developments are not just government successes, but moments of pride for every Member of Parliament and every political party, driven by shared patriotism. He said that during this Monsoon Session, this collective pride will echo in Parliament and throughout the country.

‘25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty’

Turning to the economy, Modi recalled how in 2014, when his government came to power, India was among the so-called ‘Fragile Five’ economies and ranked 10th globally.

Today, he said, India is poised to become the third-largest economy in the world.

He noted that 25 crore people have been lifted out of poverty—a transformation acknowledged by global institutions.

‘Inflation has fallen to 2%’

He also pointed out that inflation, which had reached double digits before 2014, has now fallen to around 2 per cent, offering citizens significant relief and improving overall quality of life. This combination of low inflation and high growth, he said, underscores India’s strong and steady economic journey.

Highlighting the global recognition of India’s digital revolution, the prime minister said that initiatives like Digital India and UPI have positioned the country as a world leader in real-time digital payments. He stated that India now records the highest number of digital transactions globally, and its fintech ecosystem is drawing international attention.

‘90 crore Indians now covered under social security’

Speaking of India’s social and health achievements, PM Modi mentioned that over 90 crore Indians are now covered under social security, a feat acknowledged by the International Labour Organisation (ILO).

He also referenced the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recent declaration that India is now free of trachoma, a significant public health milestone, especially during the monsoon season.

Pahalgam terrorist attack

Touching upon India’s foreign policy and global outreach, the prime minister recalled the Pahalgam killings, which shocked the world and highlighted the menace of terrorism.

In the wake of the tragedy, he appreciated how representatives from various political parties and States set aside partisan differences to engage in international outreach. He said this united diplomatic effort succeeded in exposing Pakistan’s role as a state sponsor of terrorism on the global stage, earning India increased support and understanding worldwide. He extended heartfelt gratitude to all MPs and political parties involved in this vital national endeavour.

Celebrating shared achievements

PM Modi reiterated the importance of unity and the power of speaking in one voice.

He called the Monsoon Session a celebration of India’s victories—in space, defence, economy and diplomacy—and a collective tribute to the nation’s growing strength.

He urged citizens and Parliamentarians to support and honour the armed forces and emphasised that shared national goals must transcend party lines. While political perspectives may differ, he stressed, national interest must always be a common ground.

Concluding his address, the prime minister said that this session will also feature several important legislative proposals aimed at accelerating development, empowering citizens and further strengthening India’s progress.

He wished all MPs a productive and high-quality session filled with meaningful debate and positive outcomes.
