Hyderabad: Congress leaders across the country protested on Sunday during the party’s ‘Sankalp Satyagraph’ against the disqualification of their leader Rahul Gandhi as a member of the Lok Sabha.

Protest meetings are being carried out across all states by Congress leaders.

In Gujarat, the police detained Congress chief Jagdish Tahor and leader of the Opposition in the Assembly Amit Chavda along with other party workers.

Meanwhile, Congress president along with Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday gathered for a day-long meeting to protest the action of the government. “This is just one satyagraha but there will be several such satyagrahas throughout the country. We will give any sacrifice that is needed to save the Constitution, democracy, and freedom of speech,” Mr. Kharge said.

He slammed the BJP for accusing Rahul Gandhi of insulting Other Backward Classes (OBCs) through his remark in 2019.

“They talk of OBC now, is Lalit Modi OBC, is Nirav Modi OBC, is Mehul Choksi OBC; they ran away with people’s money. If they are fugitives, why are you pained if they are criticised? You (BJP) punish the person who works to save country and send those abroad who loot country,” Mr. Kharge said.

He added, “Rahul Gandhi ji is fighting for the people of this country, for the women, for the youth, fighting against unemployment and inflation.” He alleged that the BJP wants to gag him as it is afraid that he will raise the Adani issue in the Parliament again.

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra said, “A martyred Prime Minister’s son who walked thousands of kilometres for national unity can never insult the country. Time has come to raise a voice against the arrogant government.”

Rahul Gandhi changes bio on twitter

Following his disqualification from the Lok Sabha, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Sunday changed his bio on Twitter where he described himself as a “Dis’Qualified MP.”

He also wrote “Dis’Qualified MP” on his official Wayanad Twitter account.

Even though Mr. Gandhi is yet to file a review petition, the Congress has said it will fight it legally and politically.
