Andhra Pradesh: IMD forecasts heavy rainfall in 18 districts; schools shut in Vizag, Vizianagaram, others as precautionary measure

Amaravati: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for 10 coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh on August 18.

IMD has forecast extremely heavy rainfall in Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Alluri Sitharama Raju, Kakinada, East Godavari, Konaseema, West Godavari, NTR, and Guntur.

An orange alert has been issued in eight other districts — Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvatipuram-Manyam, Krishna, Bapatla, Palnadu, Nandyal, and Prakasam.

Schools in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Anakapalli, Parvathipuram, and Alluri Sitharama Raju districts declared holiday on Monday.

According to the IMD, a low-pressure area over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal off north Andhra Pradesh and south Odisha coasts lay as a well-marked low-pressure area over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal & north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts on August 18.

It is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression during the next 12 hours and cross the south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts around the forenoon of August 19.

On Sunday, heavy rains lashed many parts of Visakhapatnam. Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has placed all its departments on high alert and initiated immediate precautionary measures to manage the situation.

People in Visakhapatnam have been advised to remain alert and dial 112, 1070, or the toll-free helpline 1800-425-0101 in case of emergencies.
