Hyderabad: In a major step towards reducing road accidents and fatalities, the Telangana government on Monday launched an online Road Safety Pledge website at Dr BR Ambedkar Telangana State Secretariat.

The initiative, aimed at promoting responsible road behaviour across the State, was unveiled by Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar.

The programme seeks to reach every motor vehicle owner at the grassroots level through an online pledge certificate and encourages students and parents to jointly commit to following traffic rules, underlining that road safety begins at home and extends to every road user.

Building a culture of road safety

Addressing the gathering, the Minister said the Transport Department is working to instil discipline, awareness and accountability among all road users. “Preventing road accidents and reducing deaths is a shared responsibility. Safe habits must start within families and be reflected in everyday behaviour on the roads,” he said.

He emphasised that the initiative is not limited to enforcement alone, but represents a collective promise by families, children and citizens across Telangana to respect traffic rules and value every life on the road.

Students and parents at the core

Explaining the concept, Ponnam Prabhakar said the department is leveraging the strong bond between students and their parents to promote road safety. Under the initiative, every student will submit a pledge agreement with their parents, committing to adhere to traffic norms.

“This emotional connection can play a crucial role in reducing accidents. We believe this pledge will help save lives in the coming days,” the Minister noted.

Mass outreach planned

The Minister directed Transport Department officials to take the online pledge campaign to the field level and ensure it reaches every motor vehicle owner. He said the programme should be carried forward as a large-scale movement across the State, with active involvement of officials and citizens alike.

The government said the initiative reflects its strong institutional commitment to road safety and aims to make Telangana a model state in responsible road usage.
