Telangana promotes 279 associate professors to professors across medical colleges, teaching hospitals

Hyderabad: In a step towards strengthening medical education and services across Telangana, the State government has promoted 279 associate professors to the post of professors in various specialities and super specialities across government medical colleges and teaching hospitals.

The orders were formally issued on July 22 by the Health, Medical and Family Welfare (HM&FW) Department under two GOs 351 and 352.

Transparent and inclusive promotion process

The Department of Medical Education (DME) facilitated the process, which included a thorough panel review and option-based postings.

The promotions were carried out under Rule 10(a) of the Telangana State and Subordinate Service Rules, 1996, and are subject to court outcomes if any pending legal cases exist.

ā€œThis is one of the most transparent and inclusive exercises we’ve seen in recent years,ā€ said Dr Kiran Bollepaka, president of the Telangana Teaching Government Doctors Association (TTGDA). ā€œThe government ensured fairness by considering all three eligible batches and even included Hyderabad in the options for super-speciality postings.ā€

Highlights from the promotions

A wide spectrum of specialities was covered, including General Medicine, Paediatrics, Surgery, Cardiology, Neurology, Gastroenterology, Nephrology, Urology, Plastic Surgery and Pediatric Surgery.

Some notable appointments include:

- Dr. R. Srinivas from Osmania Medical College, now posted at Gandhi Medical College.

- Dr M Muralidhar from MNJ Institute of Oncology and Regional Cancer Centre, promoted and retained within MNJ/OMC.

- Dr G Venugopal of Gandhi Medical College, now posted at Government Medical College, Jagtial.

- Dr Shabana Nazneen, formerly with Osmania Medical College, has been posted to Government Medical College, Nagarkurnool.

In many instances, the promoted professors have been retained in their current institutions, ensuring academic continuity and familiarity for students and colleagues alike.

Must join appointments within 15 days

According to the GO, all promoted professors must report to their new posts within 15 days of receiving their promotion orders. Failing to do so or evading the post by taking leave would result in forfeiture of the promotion for the current panel year, as per Rule 11(b) of the service rules.

The Director of Medical Education (DME) has been directed to issue immediate relieving orders and facilitate internal arrangements to ensure seamless transition.

Strengthening medical institutions statewide

With new professors being posted at medical colleges across the State, including Warangal, Sangareddy, Mahabubabad, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy, Hanumakonda, Mancherial and Jagtial, the government aims to address staffing gaps and elevate academic standards in newer institutions.

Health Secretary Dr Christina Z Chongthu, who signed both orders, emphasised the importance of regularising faculty structures across the State.

ā€œThese promotions not only recognise the commitment of our teaching faculty but also lay the foundation for quality medical education in underserved regions,ā€ she said in the official order.

This large-scale promotion drive reflects Telangana’s broader push to improve healthcare delivery and medical education infrastructure. With new professors stepping into leadership roles, the State is poised to further enhance its public health institutions in both teaching and service capacities.
