Hyderabad: Telangana government is eying a Guinness World Record for the Bathukamma festival this year.

Over 10,000 women will participate in the cultural extravaganza at LB Stadium in Hyderabad on September 21, Tourism Minister Jupally Krishna Rao announced.

Bathukamma as Telangana’s Global Identity

Bathukamma, celebrated from September 21 to 30, is considered the cultural soul of Telangana. Women and girls create flower arrangements, sing folk songs, and dance in circles before immersing the floral stacks in ponds and lakes.

Calling it “Telangana’s global identity just like the Rio Carnival is for Brazil,” Krishna Rao said the festival is a symbol of the state’s rich traditions and vibrant culture.

Nine days of festivities

The government has lined up elaborate programmes across Telangana and Hyderabad to mark the nine-day festival: Tank Bund Carnival on September 27, the best Bathukamma Contest on September 29, and a floral parade & floral Holi at Tank Bund on September 30.

The celebrations will also feature rallies, special rides, art camps, and cultural events to highlight Telangana’s traditions.

Tourism Policy with Global Vision

Emphasizing tourism as a growth engine, the minister said the state is working with a clear vision to take Telangana tourism to the global stage.

The new tourism policy sets ambitious targets of Rs 15,000 crore investments in the next five years, creation of three lakh jobs, and 10% contribution to the state’s GDP from tourism.

Telangana among top tourist destinations

Krishna Rao highlighted that Telangana already figures among the top five tourist destinations in India. The government aims to further strengthen this position by showcasing the state’s culture, heritage, and natural beauty to the world.

Panchayat Raj Minister D. Seethakka, Endowments Minister Konda Surekha, and Telangana Tourism Development Corporation Managing Director Kranthi Valluru were present at the announcement.
