Union Cabinet approves to increase marriageable age for women from 18 to 21 years

Union Cabinet has approved to increase marriageable age for men and women from 18 to 21 years.

Presently, the minimum age of marriage for men is 21 but for women, it is 18.

The government is eyeing changes to the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, Special Marriage Act, and the Hindu Marriage Act to bring the plan into action.

The Union Cabinet has cleared a proposal raising the legal age of marriage for women from 18 years to 21 years, bringing it at par with that of men, media reports have said.

Earlier, on 15th August 2020, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced that a proposal to raise the marriagable age for women was under review.
