Waaree Energies to Build India’s Largest Battery Gigafactory in Andhra Pradesh

Amaravati: In a move set to redefine India’s clean-energy landscape, Waaree Energies has announced plans to establish the nation’s largest integrated lithium-ion battery gigafactory in Andhra Pradesh.

The ambitious project, slated for Rambilli in the Anakapalli district, involves a massive investment of ₹8,175 crore. Beyond the infrastructure, the facility is expected to be a major economic driver, creating approximately 3,000 direct jobs in the region.

A 16 GWh Powerhouse

The greenfield facility will boast a capacity of 16 GWh, covering the entire battery value chain from start to finish. This "end-to-end" approach includes:

  • Cell Manufacturing: The core chemistry of the battery.

  • Battery Packs: Assembly for consumer and industrial use.

  • Large-scale BESS: Battery Energy Storage Systems designed for grid stability.

The Andhra Pradesh State Investment Promotion Board, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, has already granted in-principle approval for the project.

Strategic Impact

Minister Nara Lokesh hailed the investment as a "significant milestone," emphasizing its role in India's quest for Aatmanirbharta (self-reliance). "Waaree’s gigafactory will play a critical role in reducing import dependence while strengthening domestic manufacturing in a strategic sector," Lokesh stated.

Currently, India relies heavily on imports for lithium-ion cells. By localized production at this scale, the project addresses three critical pillars of modern infrastructure:

  1. Renewable Energy Expansion: Providing the storage needed to manage intermittent solar and wind power.

  2. Electric Mobility: Supplying the "heart" of EVs locally.

  3. Grid Stability: Ensuring a steady power supply through advanced storage solutions.

The Emerging Clean-Tech Hub

This investment aligns with the state’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy, which seeks to build a comprehensive ecosystem encompassing power generation and equipment manufacturing.

With its reputation for "speed of execution" and robust policy support, Andhra Pradesh is rapidly positioning itself as the preferred destination for next-generation energy industries. The Waaree gigafactory represents a vital "backward integration" step, ensuring the state doesn't just produce clean energy, but also the technology required to store and distribute it.
