New case against Kathi Mahesh for controversial remarks on Lord Rama

Hyderabad: The cyber crime police of Hyderabad registered a fresh case against film critic Kathi Mahesh on 13 February for his alleged derogatory remarks against Lord Rama.

An advocate, K. Karunasagar, lodged a complaint at Nampally police station against Mahesh for his comments made while addressing a meeting a week ago. Due to the nature of the complaint, the same was forwarded to the cyber crime wing and a case under Sections 506 and 509 of the IPC was registered. An investigation has been launched.

A case had already been registered against Mahesh by the cyber crime police of Hyderabad, under Section 505(1)(c) and 502 (2) (statements disturbing public tranquillity) of the IPC on 9 February for the same incident. They were acting on a complaint from a city resident, Umesh Kumar.

Kathi Mahesh, known for his controversial remarks, stirred up fresh controversy with his remarks about Lord Rama. In a video that is going viral, Mahesh said Lord Rama used to enjoy the company of several women in his Antahpuram (royal palace) of Ayodhya. His comments had raised the eyebrows of many netizens who had demanded action against Mahesh for disturbing religious harmony and hurting the sentiments of the devotees of Lord Rama.

Mahesh made these comments while addressing the Bahujana Sahitya Jatara in Hyderabad. Devotees and Hindu organizations have demanded that a case be filed against him.

Further, in a Facebook post, Mahesh wrote, “RSS/BJP/VHP somehow managed to indoctrinate youth below 30 years of age and turned them into fundamentalist. It is scary to listen to their language of hatred, violence and madness (sic).” In another post, warning people who wanted to file a case against him for his derogatory remarks on Lord Rama, he wrote, “I am a frightful Hindu than you people. Be careful with me. I am Dalita Charvaka.”

Mahesh a writer turned director who has also acted in a few films. He has co-authored Telegu film ‘Minugurulu’, which was the Telugu film industry’s official entry for the Oscar nominations in 2014. He was earlier embroiled in a controversy over his comments against Jana Sena Chief Pawan Kalyan. He came to the limelight by advocating a new political philosophy of working against the feudalistic forces in politics.
