Now, helmet must for pillion riders in Cyberabad

Hyderabad: The Cyberabad police have made it compulsory for pillion riders to wear a helmet. The traffic police have issued an advisory, imposing the helmet rule as more than 100 pillion riders died last year in Cyberabad commissionerate, said police officers.

Under Section 129 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is compulsory that any person above four years of age riding on a motorcycle has to wear a helmet. Though applicable for a long time, the law is yet to be implemented in most states.

Bangalore became the first city to make the helmet compulsory for pillion riders. Other states like Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Kerela have also made it mandatory.

If a pillion rider is found not wearing a helmet, the rider can be fined Rs 1,000 under the newly amended Motor Vehicles Act.

The Rachakonda commissionerate will also implement the helmet rule for pillion riders, said sources.
