Pilgrimage turns tragic as 6 killed in Srikakulam road mishap

Srikakulam: Pilgrimage turned tragic for a family from Odisha after six people, including two children and as many women, died in a road accident in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh early on Saturday.

The family from Berhampur was returning home after paying obeisance to Lord Nrusimha Swami at Simhachalam near Vizag when the car carrying them veered off the road and rolled down to a field near Kothapalli Bridge under Mandhasa Mandal.

The police said the driver of the vehicle lost its control due to overspeeding and perhaps also drowsiness. The car hit a culvert and plunged several feet down into a field filled with water. The victims died of multiple injuries and choking due to water, said the police.

The driver of the car suffered severe injuries and is battling for life in a hospital. The bodies have been sent for post-mortem.

The Srikakulam police said that they have informed their Odisha counterparts and the relatives of the deceased.
