CM Revanth accuses ‘Bad Brothers’ Kishan Reddy, KTR of stalling development, wasting public money

Hyderabad: With the Jubilee Hills bye-election fast approaching, Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy launched a scathing attack on Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), calling them ‘Bad Brothers’ who have stalled Hyderabad’s progress.

Reddy urged the voters of Jubilee Hills to defeat BRS and BJP in such a way that they lose their deposits.

Development divide: Congress versus BRS/BJP

CM Reddy centred his address on a comparison of governance between the Congress’s tenures (2004-2014) and the combined rule of BRS in the state and BJP at the Centre (2014-2023).

Congress’s legacy: The Chief Minister asserted that Congress sowed the seeds for all major development in Hyderabad, including the international airport, metro rail, knowledge centres, IT, and pharma sectors. He claimed that the increase in Hyderabad’s revenue is a direct result of plans initiated by the Congress.

Stalled progress and blame: He squarely blamed the BRS and the BJP for obstructing the state’s growth, with questions such as

- “Is it not the BRS and BJP that prevented the ITIR (Information Technology Investment Region) from coming to Hyderabad?”

- “In 10 years, did they extend the Metro by even one kilometre?”

He further criticised the BRS for failing to complete irrigation projects started by the Congress and demanded an answer on what they did with the Rs 20 lakh crore budget over the decade.

‘BRS used public money from projects for itself’

CM Reddy alleged that the BRS government’s major construction projects are a waste of public money, as the party used the funds for personal or party use. He listed the projects, explaining how they have been misused by the previous government:

Pragathi Bhavan: “Pragathi Bhavan was only useful for KCR and his family,” the CM said. He alleged that the former Chief Minister built bulletproof bathrooms in Pragathi Bhavan out of fear, likening him to Saddam Hussein.

New Secretariat: He questioned the need to demolish the old Secretariat for a new one, stating it was done ‘to correct Vastu for the son,’ and asked, “Did anyone get a job? Was it useful to anyone? Did the poor benefit?”

Kaleshwaram Project: He stated that the project was built only to pour Rs 1 lakh crore into the Godavari.

Command Control Room: This was established ‘only for phone tapping,’ he alleged.

He held up these projects—Pragathi Bhavan, Kaleshwaram, Command Control and the new Secretariat—as symbols of expenditure that offered no utility to the people.

The Bad Brothers

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy labelled Union Minister G Kishan Reddy (BJP) and former minister KT Rama Rao (BRS) as ‘Bad Brothers,’ accusing them of actively obstructing the Congress government’s development plans.

He recalled that former Congress stalwarts PJR and Shashidhar Reddy were once known as ‘Hyderabad Brothers’ for their devotion to the city.

He claimed that the bad brothers are blocking key initiatives like Metro expansion, bringing Godavari Waters to the city, elevated corridors and the Future City plan.

He specifically targeted Kishan Reddy, asking, “Why are you obstructing the Musi River clean-up?” and “Why did you succumb to KTR?”

CM Reddy highlighted the Congress government's recent achievements:

- Bringing in Rs 3 lakh crore in investments in the short working period of one year (excluding the election code period).

- Securing clearances for airports in Warangal and Adilabad and a Greenfield Highway for a dry port.

Land grabbing and law and order

The Chief Minister made serious accusations regarding land encroachment and the drug menace under the previous regime.

Lake Encroachment: He alleged that the BRS encroached upon 44 of the 695 lakes in the city.

HYDRAA and Eagle Force: He defended the government’s HYDRAA (water harvesting initiative) and Eagle Force, which were criticised by KTR, and challenged him to establish a truth-finding committee if he believed they made any mistake.

Drugs and ganja: He asserted that KTR’s primary contribution was only ‘ganja and drugs,’ and mentioned an alleged incident involving KTR’s brother-in-law caught taking drugs.

Educational institutions

Addressing the issue of educational institutions threatening to close due to the non-release of funds, CM Reddy issued a stern warning.

“Education is a service, not a business. We will not tolerate it if colleges try to close down because their demands were not met.”

“We are not so foolish as to not understand which political party you are collaborating with,” he added, cautioning against any form of ‘blackmail’ against the government.

Appeal to Jubilee Hills voters

The Chief Minister stressed that a representative’s support is essential for the development of the city. He dismissed the debate on the caste survey results, saying, “The truth will be known to all on November 14.”
