EC notifies bye-elections for three Rajya Sabha seats from Andhra

Amaravati: The Election Commission of India (ECI) notified the schedule for by-elections to fill three vacant Rajya Sabha seats from Andhra Pradesh.

The vacancies arose following the resignations of YSRCP Rajya Sabha members M Venkata Ramana, B Mastan Rao Yadav and BC leader R Krishnaiah.

The notification for these elections will be issued on December 3, 2024. The last date for filing nominations is December 10.

Polling and counting of votes of the bye-elections is scheduled on December 20.

After Jagan-led party lost the elections, YSRC MPs Mopidevi Venkataramana and Beeda Mastan Rao resigned from their Rajya Sabha seats due to dissatisfaction with the party's internal affairs. Their resignations were accepted by Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on August 29. Both the leaders then joined the TDP.

Krishnaiah, who was also elections the Rajya Sabha on a YSRC ticket, resigned from his position. He submitted his resignation to Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar on September 23, which was accepted on September 24. Krishnaiah had four years left in his term but stated that his resignation was motivated by the need to overcome obstacles in strengthening the BC movement in Telangana.

Currently, YS Jagan Mohan Reddy-led party has only eight Rajya Sabha members.

The TDP-led NDA alliance is poised to capture three Rajya Sabha seats in the ensuing bye-elections scheduled on December 20, powered by its brute majority of 164 seats in the southern stateā€™s Assembly.

The TDP has 135 Assembly seats followed by Jana Sena (21) and BJP (8).

N Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP is expected to get a foothold in the Rajya Sabha as it currently has no representation while the YSRCP may not contest the elections as it does not have the required numbers.

For the first time in about 40 years, the TDP has no representation in the Upper House as it refrained from contesting the Rajya Sabha elections earlier this year due to lack of sufficient number of MLAs which could end soon.
