Hyderabad: The joint opposition of 17 parties has chosen Margaret Alva as the vice-president nominee for the Vice-President elections to be held on August 6th. The nominations are to be filed by July 19.
NCP chief Sharad Pawar announced that the joint opposition has decided for Margaret Alva as the vice-presidential election candidate. Margaret Alva has also received support from Shiv Sena. Sanjay Raut, member of the Rajya Sabha says, "We have supported presidential nominee Draupadi Murmu as she is from the tribal region. There is sentiment for tribals in the country. Many of our MP's and MLA's are from the tribal community. In this alliance we will now support Margaret Alva as vice-president nominee."
Margaret Alva has severed as the 17th Governor of Goa, 23rd Governor of Gujarat, 20th Governor of Rajasthan and 4th Governor of Uttarakhand till the end of her tenure in August 2014. Bharatiya Janata Party has named Jagdeep Dhankar, Governor of West Bengal state as their vice-presidential candidate.
The vice-presidential elections are also to be a test of might of power between the ruling party and opposition.
