Hyderabad: In a boost to Congress in the Uppal constituency, Bonthu Rammohan ā€“ the first mayor of Hyderabad in Telangana from the BRS ā€“ joined the Congress party along with other current and former municipal corporators.

Former mayor Thigala Krishna Reddy, his daughter-in-law Anita Reddy, and current deputy mayor Srilata Shoban Reddy also joined the Congress party on Friday. A function to facilitate their induction into Congress was held in Gandhi Bhawan with the in-charge Deepa Das Munshi welcoming them.

Uppal Constituency strengthened

With a major chunk of municipal corporators now becoming a part of the Congress party, Congress is looking forward to strengthening its numbers in Uppal. The Congress party has not done well in the city but a recent steady stream of newcomers and leaders from other parties making way to Congress has boosted its ranks considerably.

Keeping an eye on the Lok Sabha elections 2024, the switch assumes significance as there will be many more workers and influential leaders who will work for the party, said sources.

More in the city to join Congress

According to sources, there are going to be more municipal corporators from BRS who are going to switch to the Congress party in the coming days. The new joiners and plans to induct more have become one of the prime topics of discussion during many internal party meetings. The Congress party is looking at setting its base in the city and those who are reaching out are being given support.

Outskirts to see an influx too

Vikarabad Zilla Parishad chairperson Sunitha Mahender Reddy also met chief minister Revanth Reddy after officially joining the party.

With most of the posts still vacant and there being a dearth of members in the city areas, Congress is looking towards the contribution of the new leaders in a bid to strengthen their base in Hyderabad, Secunderabad and periphery areas where they didnā€™t do well in the recently concluded State Legislative Assembly elections in 2023.
