Hyderabad: 61 percent of backward class candidates have won the municipal elections in Telangana, giving a decisive victory to the Indian National Congress.
The Congress party recorded a massive surge in support, securing 1,537 ward seats and capturing 39.1% of the total vote share. This is a significant leap from its 2020 performance. Of the seven major municipal corporations, Congress secured five mayoral posts, including Nizamabad, Mahbubnagar, Ramagundam, Nalgonda, and Mancherial.
The party’s dominance was particularly evident in reserved categories, as Congress candidates won all three mayoral posts specifically reserved for women. In total, the party is set to lead 82 municipal councils and five corporations.
BC Candidates
Without the reservations the BC candidates have secured 61 percent votes. G Niranjan, chairman of Telangana Commission for Backward Classes explained, "In the recently held Panchayat elections, BC candidates won 52.75 percent in general seats. Though the 28.22% of Municipal Wards and 35.25% wards in Municipal Corporations were reserved for BCs in the ensuing elections, the overall victory is of 61 percent seats."
BC Commission Chairman G. Niranjan, alongside members Rapolu Jayaprakash, Tirumalagiri Surender, and Balalakshmi Rangu, hailed the results as a "clear indication of increased awareness" among BC communities.
Demand for 42% Reservation
The election results have reignited the debate over the state's reservation policy. With a comprehensive survey showing that BCs constitute 56.33% of Telangana's population, the BC Commission is urging the Central Government to approve a pending State Assembly Bill that provides for 42% reservation.
The Commission has formally requested that the policy be included in the 9th Schedule of the Constitution to protect it from legal challenges. They also issued a public appeal to those who have filed court cases against the increased reservations to withdraw them, citing the electoral success of BC candidates as proof of their readiness for greater political leadership.
