Hunger strike: Sharmilas blouse torn in scuffle, taken into preventive custody

Hyderabad: Tension gripped Telugu Talli flyover on Thursday when Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy's sister YS Sharmila was injured and her blouse was torn during a scuffle with police on Thursday.

Police later took Sharmila into preventive custody for breaching the time window permitted by the law enforcement agency for a daylong hunger strike demanding job notification for unemployed youth. She was later released.

She had requested the city police to grant permission for a three day fast to highlight the problems of unemployment in the state. However, authorities gave her permission for only one day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to protest at Dharna Chowk near Indira Park.

Despite getting permission for one day, she wanted to continue her protest for two more days and sought an extension, which was denied. Later, she marched towards the Secretariat with her followers. However, she along with supporters was stopped near Katta Maisamma temple.

A scuffle ensued with police and YS Sharmila's blouse was torn. She suffered injuries in her hand and collapsed at the Telugu Talli flyover near Secretariat on Thursday evening.

Furious with the way the police had acted, Sharmila declared that she would not even touch water till the police release her supporters.

Later she was taken to a hospital where the doctors gave her first aid. She later continued her protest at her residence.

The trouble started when Sharmila, in an impulsive decision, decided to walk to her home from Indira Park after the police made it clear that she cannot continue her hunger strike as the time given to her was up.

She warned the police that she will not tolerate if anyone touched her again. Raising anti-KCR slogans, she claimed she will become Chief Minister of Telangana one day. Her fast will continue for 72 hours as planned earlier.

Slamming Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, Sharmila said he had shed crocodile tears when youth took their lives by suicide. "Why are you blind to the youth resorting to such extreme measures? Is it because you are in a slumber at your farmhouse," she asked.
