‘Ideological homecoming’: BJP leader Birender Singh joins Congress

New Delhi: Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former Union minister Birender Singh on Tuesday joined the Congress along with his wife and former legislator Prem Lata. His son and sitting Hisar MP Brijendra Singh joined the party a few weeks ago.

Birender Singh was inducted into the party by the AICC general secretary Mukul Wasnik in presence of several senior leaders who included former Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, AICC general secretaries Randeep Singh Surjewala, Kumari Selja, former Punjab CM Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, Haryana Congress president Udai Bhan, senior leaders Capt Ajay Yadav, Kiran Choudhry, Dr Naseer Hussain and Pawan Khera.

‘Homecoming will strengthen the party’

Welcoming him into the party, Wasnik said, Birender Singh despite having joined the BJP had always stood firm on his principles. He pointed out, it was just a brief period when he had left the Congress and it was a homecoming for him, which will strengthen the party.

Speaking on the occasion, Hooda said the homecoming of Birender Singh is good for both him as well as the Congress party. He said it will strengthen the party at the state as well as the national level.

Surjewala, while speaking on the occasion, appreciated the principled stand that Birender Singh took no matter which party he was in. He particularly mentioned how he stood for the farmers during their protest while going against the party line.

Speaking on the occasion, Birender Singh said, it was not just a homecoming but also the ‘ideological homecoming’ for him by returning to Congress. He pointed out, that he had spent 42 years in politics, before joining the BJP, and all that time he had served the Congress only.

The senior Haryana leader, who is the grandson of Sir Chhotu Ram, said that winds of change were blowing across the country and the results will be before everyone very soon.

He said it was very important to save the Republic, the Constitution and the Parliamentary democracy in the country and all like-minded people must come together for this purpose.
