‘Irresponsible and divisive’: Minority organisations condemn CM Revanth’s remark on Muslims

Hyderabad: All-India SC, ST, BC, Muslim Foundation and Students Islamic Organisation (SIO) of India strongly condemned Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s statement made during a Jubilee Hills corner meeting in which he said, “Congress hai toh Musalman hai, Congress nahi toh aap kuch nahi (Only if Congress is there, there are Muslims. Without Congress, you are nothing).”

Irresponsible, says SIO

The remark made by CM Revanth about Muslims, during a meeting as part of the party’s campaign for the Jubilee Hills bye-election, has triggered anger in the community.

SIO, in a public statement, strongly condemned the remark as ‘deeply insulting and divisive’.

“The strength and worth of any community rests upon its own principles and integrity and not in favour or patronage of political powers. Such remarks are not only politically irresponsible but also a direct affront on the self-respect and dignity of the entire Muslim community,” the statement read.

The statement exposes a feudal and vote-bank mindset, and also reflects the erosion of democratic and moral values when a Chief Minister claims a monopoly over the identity of an entire community, said the members of SIO.

SIO demanded that the chief minister immediately withdraw his words and issue a public apology for this blatant attempt to undermine constitutional equality.

SIO has also urged the Election Commission of India to take serious cognisance of such inflammatory and undemocratic remarks, which violate the spirit of free and fair elections.

Objections from Muslim Foundation

The All-India SC ST BC Muslim Foundation has strongly condemned the statement, stating, “We, the concerned citizens of Hyderabad, unequivocally condemn the communal, divisive, demeaning and derogatory statement insulting the entire Muslim community. To say that Muslim existence and respect are because of Congress is foolish and contrary to the truth.”

Chief Minister’s clarification

CM Revanth clarified that his remarks were distorted. He said, “His intention was to convey that the Congress party always stood for minorities and provided them with opportunities and emphasised that equal treatment was given to all communities.
