Kaleshwaram report, urea crisis, rain damage to dominate Telangana Assembly from Aug 30
Hyderabad: The Telangana Assembly session commencing August 30 is expected to focus on the judicial commission report that held former Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao accountable for alleged lapses in the Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project.
Other pressing issues, including the ongoing urea shortage, damage caused by heavy rains and BC quota in local bodies, are also likely to feature in the discussions.
Governor Jishnu Dev Varma has summoned both the Assembly and Legislative Council to meet at 10:30 am on August 30, according to an official notification.
Kaleshwaram Report to take centerstage
The State Cabinet, on August 4, accepted the findings of the judicial commission, which held former CM Chandrasekhar Rao ‘directly and vicariously’ responsible for irregularities in the Kaleshwaram project’s construction and management.
Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy stated the government would convene the assembly to debate the report and determine further action.
BRS MLA T Harish Rao criticised the release of a 60-page summary of the report, calling it ‘false’ and ‘politically motivated.’
The Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Project, a multi-purpose initiative on the Godavari River in Bhupalpally district, had emerged as a key issue in the 2023 Assembly elections due to damage to barrages constructed under the previous regime.
Heavy rains and flood impact
The heavy rainfall since August 27 has caused flooding in low-lying areas and agricultural fields. Lawmakers are expected to discuss relief measures and steps to mitigate the damage caused by the ongoing monsoon.
Urea shortage triggers farmers’ protests
A shortage of urea has sparked protests in several districts. The Assembly is likely to debate measures to ensure timely supply and support for farmers ahead of the sowing season.
BC quota bills await Presidential assent
The session may also take up discussion on two Bills providing a 42 per cent quota to BCs in local bodies, education, and employment, which are pending Presidential approval.
Earlier this month, CM Revanth Reddy led a protest in New Delhi, accusing the BJP-led Centre of delaying the reservation bills.
