Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) will hold a joint meeting of its Legislature Party (LP) and State Executive Committee on December 19, under the chairmanship of party president and former Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR), at Telangana Bhavan here.
The meeting, scheduled to begin at 2 pm, is expected to set the tone for an intensified political offensive against the Congress-led state government, with irrigation, river water sharing and farmers’ interests dominating the agenda.
Irrigation projects, river waters in focus
According to a note from KCR’s office, the BRS will review what it described as the Congress government’s failure to carry forward major irrigation projects initiated during the party’s decade-long tenure.
The discussions will centre on issues related to the Krishna and Godavari River waters, which the BRS claims are being compromised due to the state government’s alleged negligence.
The party is expected to accuse the government of not taking effective steps to stop Andhra Pradesh from diverting Krishna and Godavari waters, thereby weakening Telangana’s irrigation rights.
Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift project key issue
The Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project is likely to figure prominently in the deliberations. The BRS plans to object strongly to the Congress government’s reported acceptance of only 45 TMC of Krishna waters for the project, against the 91 TMC allocation secured during the previous BRS regime.
The party is expected to term the state government’s stand before the Centre as detrimental to the interests of farmers in Palamuru, Rangareddy and Nalgonda districts.
Centre, BJP MPs in the dock
The joint meeting will also take up the alleged inaction of BJP MPs from Telangana on irrigation and water-sharing issues. The BRS is likely to accuse the BJP-led Union government of injustice to the state by backing Andhra Pradesh’s water diversion policies.
In this backdrop, KCR is expected to call for a renewed public movement to safeguard Telangana’s irrigation rights and protect farmers’ interests.
Organisational review, future action plan
Apart from policy issues, the meeting will review organisational matters and chalk out a roadmap for future mass movements aimed at protecting Telangana’s interests, party sources said.
