Komatireddy’s remark on Jagga Reddy being ‘best choice’ for leadership stirs buzz; TPCC issues clarification

Hyderabad: The internal dynamics of the Telangana Congress have once again come under the spotlight following sensational remarks by Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy, who openly ‘suggested’ a change in the state party leadership.

In a swift response, TPCC general secretary Madhu Satyam Goud issued a strong defence of the current TPCC President, Mahesh Kumar Goud, calling for unity and stability.

What is the controversy about?

The stir began when Minister Komatireddy, speaking to the media in the Assembly lobbies on Tuesday, stated that senior leader T Jagga Reddy would be the ‘best choice’ for the TPCC president post.

Komatireddy praised Jagga Reddy as a ‘mass leader’ with deep grassroots connections, even comparing him to the late firebrand leader P Janardhan Reddy (PJR).

The Minister went as far as to claim that under Jagga Reddy’s leadership, the Congress could win 100 seats in the state. These comments were seen by many as a direct snub to the sitting president, Mahesh Kumar Goud, and a violation of the party’s ‘one person, one post’ principle, given that the current president also serves as an MLC.

The response

After the minister’s comments, support for Mahesh Kumar Goud has been pouring in from different quarters.

TPCC General Secretary Madhu Satyam Goud released a statement today emphasising that the party is currently thriving under Mahesh Kumar Goud’s guidance. He argued that the current leadership has provided ‘much-needed direction and stability’ since taking over in September 2024.

Key points from Satyam Goud’s defence included:

- Operational Success: He noted that party activities have become more coordinated and disciplined under the current president, leading to victories in recent local polls and the Jubilee Hills by-election.

- Social Justice: Satyam Goud highlighted that Mahesh Kumar Goud represents the BC (Backward Classes) community, and his elevation reflects the party’s commitment to social justice.

- Synergy with Government: He credited the ‘dual leadership’ of CM Revanth Reddy and Mahesh Kumar Goud for the successful implementation of welfare schemes like the loan waiver and Indiramma housing.

A call for discipline

While Minister Komatireddy’s team later issued a clarification stating he did not intend to undermine the current president, the comments have already created a stir within the ranks.
