MP Kiran Kumar urges Centre to resolve funding delays for Hyderabad Metro Rail expansion
The estimated cost for the phase 2 corridor of the metro rail is Rs 24,269 crores and Telangana government is asking center to clear the funds for the project

Hyderabad: Telangana MP Kiran Kumar Chammala is asking the central government to clear the funds for Hyderabad Metro Rail
Hyderabad: Member of Parliament Kiran Kumar Chamala raised the issue of funding for the metro rail corridor of 76.4 km in the standing committee meeting in Delhi.
The Central government has sanctioned metro rail in 20 cities of India.
Phase 2 with 5 corridors
The Metro Rail project in the first phase has three corridors for 69 km, and is the second largest network after New Delhi. The Telangana government is now working on phase 2 with 5 corridors, which will cover 76.4 km of the city.
The estimated cost for the phase 2 corridor of the metro rail is Rs 24,269 crores. Kiran Kumar Chamala said, āI have raised the issue of funding from the Central government, as other metro cities are being given funds for the metro rail. I urged the chairman of housing and urban affairs N Srinivas Reddy to also look into the funding of phase 2 of the metro rail project.ā
Kiran Kumar Chamala said, āHyderabad is the fastest growing city with an explosion of private vehicles leading to increasing traffic congestion and high levels of vehicular pollution. Metro rail will help to ease the burden of traffic.ā
CM Revanth Reddy, who is in New Delhi to finalise the Cabinet portfolios, in a media chit chat said, āMember of Parliament Kishen Reddy is blocking the Central funds for Telangana. Not a single project is getting funding from the Centre.ā
CM Reddy followed up on the issue with prime minister Narendra Modi in October 2024 and January, February and May 2025. Chamala in the standing committee meeting said, āI requested the committee to expedite sanctions as per the approved norms GOI share of the investment is 18 per cent(4230 crore), Government of Telangana will be 30 per cent (7313 crore) and debt component is 48 per cent (11,693 crore).ā
He further said, The government of India is talking about Viksit Bharat 2047, transforming India into a developed entity by 2047, the 100th year of independence for India, India is poised to be a US$ 30 trillion economy and Hyderabad one of top 5 cities having capability to contribute US$ 5 trillion to nation.ā
Metro rail projects
The Government of India sanctioned metro rail projects as JV projects in 20 cities, both big and small, from 2012 to 2024. In 2024, Chennai Metro phase 2, with a length of 118.9 Km, with an estimated cost of 63,240 crores and Bangalore Metro Phase 3, with 44.65 km, with an estimated cost of 15,611 crore were sanctioned.
Telangana is rapidly growing State toward becoming 50 per cent urbanisation with the proper support of the Government of India for the Regional Ring Road, Metro phase 2 and Musi Rejuvenation.
