Munugode Bye-poll: Congress names  Palvai Sravanthi as contender

Hyderabad: The Indian National Congress on 9 September approved the candidature of Palvai Sravanthi for the Munugode bye-election necessitated by the resignation of MLA Komatireddy Rajagopal Reddy on August 8 after he resigned from Congress and joined the BJP.

The AICC press release put out on Friday read, "The Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi has approved the candidature of Smt. Palavai Sravanthi as Congress candidate for the forthcoming bye-election to the legislative assembly of Telangana from 93- Munugode constituency."

The announcement comes when Munugode is witnessing fierce campaigns hosted by all three parties- TRS, Congress and the BJP, sending their top leaders to address the public.

Meanwhile, TRS and BJP are yet to announce their candidates for the by-poll.

Munugode is part of the Bhongir Lok Sabha Parliamentary constituency in the Nalgonda district. The constituency has 2,00,956 voters including 1,02,801 male voters, and 98,146 female voters. In the 2018 Telangana elections, Munugode recorded a voter turnout of 91.07%. In 2014, the turnout was 82.14%.

In the 2018 general elections in Munugode Assembly Constituency, Congress candidate Komatireddy Rajgopal Reddy won the seat defeating TRS candidate Koosakuntla Prabhakar Reddy. Rajgopal Reddy (INC) got 97,239 votes (48.90%), Koosakuntla Prabhakar Reddy (TRS) got 74,687 votes (37.56%) votes and BJP's Gangidi Manohar Reddy (BJP)12,725 votes (6.40 %).
