Rahul Gandhi: Congress aims to have 50 per cent women chief ministers in 10 years

New Delhi: To give proper representation to women in power, former Congress president Rahul Gandhi observed that in another ten years, the partyā€™s target should be to have 50 per cent women chief ministers.

Addressing the ā€˜Utsaahā€™ Mahila Congress state convention in Kerala on Saturday, Rahul Gandhi said, ā€œI was thinking to myself, what would be a good goal for the Congress party about women, what would be a good target for us to try and achieve. And I thought a good target for the Congress party would be that if in ten years from today, 50 per cent of our chief ministers are women.ā€

He asserted that the Congress party does not have a single chief minister who is a woman, but there are many women in the party, who have the qualities to be very good chief ministers.

Asserting that it is very important to start being aggressive about promoting women, Rahul Gandhi said, the central fight between the BJP and the Congress is about how women should be treated.

Taking a dig at the BJP for postponing the implementation of the Womenā€™s Reservation Bill for ten years, he said, ā€œIt is for the first time I have seen a bill passed in Parliament that will be implemented a decade later.ā€ The only bill that the BJP is implementing 10 years after its passing, is the one that has to do with women empowerment, he pointed out.

Rahul also took part in a separate event organised to mark the tenth anniversary of Kerala daily, Suprabhaatham.
