Hyderabad: In a notable development, 15 doctors across political affiliations clinched victory in the 2023 Telangana Assembly Elections held on Sunday. The majority of these candidates trace their educational roots to the esteemed Osmania Medical College and Gandhi Medical College, the premier state-run medical institutions in Telangana.

While most of the doctors among the winning candidates are from the Congress party, other parties have their share of medical experts. Several seasoned doctors secured victories across various constituencies, bringing their medical expertise in various specialisations into the political realm.

1. Dr Ramchander Naik, an MS general surgeon, secured the Congress ticket for MLA Dornakal and defeated BRS’s Dharamsoth Redya Naik with 53,131 votes.

2. In Achampet, Dr Vamshi Krishna, an MS general surgeon from Congress, emerged victorious by defeating BRS’s Guvvala Balaraju with an impressive margin of 1,15,337 votes.

3. Dr Palvai Harish, BJP, an MS orthopaedic from Sirpur, won by 3,088 votes, defeating BRS’s Koneru Konappa.

4. INC Dr Murali Naik, an MS general surgeon, secured a resounding victory in Mahabubabad with 1,16,644 votes, beating BRS’s Banoth Shankar Naik.

5. Similarly, INC Dr Satyanarayana, an MS general surgeon, emerged victorious from Manakondur, defeating BRS’s Erupula Balakrishna Rasamayi with 32,365 votes.

6. Dr Mainampally Rohith, a young Congress leader with an MBBS, clinched victory in Medak.

7. Dr Parnika Reddy, INC, another general physician, secured a win in Narayanpet with 7,951 votes, defeating BRS’s Rajender Reddy.

8. INC Dr Sanjeeva Reddy, a paediatrician from Narayankhed, emerged victorious with 6,547 votes, defeating BRS’s Mahareddy Bhupal Reddy.

9. BRS Dr Kalvakuntla Sanjay, a neurologist, achieved success in Korutla.

10. INC Dr. Vivek Venkataswamy, an MBBS, secured victory from Chennur.

11. Another health practitioner, Dr Tellam Venkat Rao from BRS, an MS Ortho, won with 53,252 votes in Bhadrachalam.

12. Congress Dr Bhupathi Reddy, an MS orthopaedic, emerged victorious from Nizamabad (Rural), defeating BRS’s Goverdhan Bajireddy with 21,963 votes.

13. In Jagtial, BRS Dr Sanjay, an MS ophthalmologist, retained his seat with an impressive 70,243 votes.

14. Meanwhile, INC Dr Ragamayi, an MD pulmonologist, secured a win in Sathupally.

15. In Nagarkurnool, INC Dr Kuchukulla Rajesh Reddy, an MDS, emerged victorious.

Implications for Governance in Telangana

Having previously taken an oath as health practitioners to treat people with integrity, these doctors are now set to take on a new responsibility as Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) of the Telangana Legislative State Assembly.

The doctors who have triumphed in various districts expressed their readiness to address the pleas of the people.
