Hyderabad: Justice Ujjal Bhuyan of Telangana High Court granted bail to BJP state president and Karimnagar MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar. Police lodged him in prison three days ago after foiling his protest against GO 317.

MP Bandi Sanjay was sentenced to 14 days in judicial custody on Monday after his bail application was rejected by the district session court.

Bandi Sanjay along with four other BJP workers was arrested on 2 January after he was charged with breaking COVID-19 norms and other provisions of the Disaster Management Act and assaulting the police. He was booked under section 353,332,327 of IPC and other provisions of Disaster Management Acts.

Tension prevailed in Karimnagar on Sunday when Bandi Sanjay attempted to hold 'Jana Jagarana Deeksha' at the party office. The BJP demanded amendments to GO 317 which it said was unfair to the employees and teachers of the state. It gave a call to hold Jana Jagana Deeksha by staying awake through the night till 5 a.m in the morning.

The police had denied permission to hold the Deeksha in view of the COVID-19 pandemic. Cops took the BJP activists, who arrived at the party office, into custody.

Bandi Sanjay, however, began his Deeksha by closing the gates of the party office. He criticized the police for not allowing them to offer Deeksha which they claimed was peaceful. He was later arrested by the police.

After his arrest, Bandi Sanjay continued his protest at the Manakondur police station. He also condemned the police for arresting party activists.

Karimnagar city police commissioner V. Satyanarayana said no permission had been given for the Deeksha because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
