Gudivada: Tension gripped Gudivada town of Krishna district after supporters of Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and YSRCP clashed over the death anniversary of former Congress MLA Vangaveeti Mohana Ranga Rao.
TDP activists alleged that YSRCP leader Merugumala Kali had made a phone call to former MLA Ravi Venkateswara Rao and threatened to kill him if they observe the death anniversary of Vangaveeti Ranga in Gudivada.
Clashes erupted when supporters tried to pay tributes at Vangaveeti Ranga's statue in Gudivada. Police swung into action and imposed Section 144 in Gudivada town to bring the situation under control.
On Monday, followers of former Minister Kodali Nani and TDP leader Ravi Venkateswara Rao raised slogans in support of their leaders. YSRCP leaders argued that the TDP has no right to organize a programme to mark the death anniversary of the slain Congress leader.
Vangeeveti Ranga Rao was in the Congress party when he was brutally murdered in 1988. He represented the Vijayawada East constituency in the assembly.
