Waqf Amendment Bill has been bulldozed through LS: Sonia Gandhi breaks silence

Chairperson of Congress Parliamentary Party Sonia Gandhi

New Delhi: Chairperson of Congress Parliamentary Party Sonia Gandhi on Thursday said the Waqf Amendment Bill has been bulldozed through Lok Sabha.

She was addressing Congress MPs at Central Hall. She delved on the attack by BJP against the Congress and the bills that will weaken the constitution of India.

ā€œThe Waqf Amendment Bill has been bulldozed in the Lok Sabha. The Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha is not allowed to speak. The functioning of Parliament is not hampered by the Opposition but by he government. These facts have to reach the people of India,ā€ she said.

Assault on Constitution

The Congress party reiterated its stand that the Waqf Amendment Bill is a brazen assault on the Constitution. Sonia Gandhi said, ā€œ It is very much part of the BJPā€™s deliberate strategy to keep our society in a state of permanent polarization.ā€

She said the One Nation, One Election (ONOE) Bill is another subversion of the Constitution. ā€œWe strongly oppose this legislation as well. Meanwhile, our plea for the immediate implementation of the womenā€™s reservation bill passed by both Houses two years back continues to be wilfully ignored along with the other demand for one-third reservation for women belonging to scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and OBC communities,ā€ said Sonia Gandhi.

Congress President and leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge and leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi along with other members were present in the meeting.

Land Acquisition Act Four

National Food Security Act 2013

Sonia Gandhi said, ā€œAt least 14 crore have been denied their legal entitlements due to the Modi governmentā€™s unprecedented failure to conduct the Census that was due in 2021. Both Congress President and I have drawn attention to this, and I hope all of you will take this forward in your respective areas.ā€

Intention to keep the constitution on paper

Sonia Gandhi said, ā€œWhether it is education, civil rights and liberties, our federal structure, or conduct of elections, the Modi government is dragging the country into an abyss. The Constitution will remain on paper, and we know they intend to demolish even that. All of us need to continue to fight for what is right and just. To expose the Modi governmentā€™s failing and intention to turn India into a surveillance state.ā€

PM Modi rebranded 2004-2024 initiatives

Sonia Gandhi further said, ā€œPrime Minister Narendra Modi has rebranded, repackaged, and marketed numerous initiatives taken during 2004-2014 as his accomplishments. That too needs to be exposed through our public outreach activities.

BJP MPs target Congress-ruled states

Sonia Gandhi said that in the functioning of the Parliament it has time and again been seen where the BJP MPā€™s are targeting the Congress ruled states.

Gandhi said, ā€œDuring the Zero House, total falsehoods are being spread about Congress-ruled states. I think all of you should be equally aggressive and raising the failures and mis-governance in BJP-ruled states. This will mean much more pointed homework and research on our part.ā€

The Congress is meeting all the DCC presidents of states in India and is working towards strengthening them. The AICC session in Gujarat is aimed at creating a strong base of leaders so that they can counter the BJP.
