Hyderabad: Questioning the reasons for Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekhar Rao's absence during the COVID-19 vaccination programme, the BJP, on 17 January, said it was irresponsible for the elected head of the state to remain absent on the first day of the vaccination programme.

The nationwide vaccination drive was launched on 16 January by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In Telangana, the vaccination drive was led by Governor Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan at the Nizam Institute of Medical Science (NIMS). The vaccination programme was launched at 139 locations in the state and it will be rolled out from 1,213 centers from next Monday.

A day after the vaccine roll-out, BJP Telangana spokesperson K. Krishna Saagar Rao said, "KCR neither personally launched the vaccination programme in the state nor did he give a public message to the people to participate in the historic vaccination programme. BJP considers KCR's conduct grossly irresponsible towards public health in the state, especially in a state that has witnessed the second-highest infection rate in India."

The BJP spokesperson also said that all Chief Ministers in the nation where the first phase vaccination was launched, including those in the neighborhood states like Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka, personally participated in the vaccination programme and gave a compelling public message to people of their state to undergo safe vaccination.

"It's heartening to see the Governor of Telangana, Dr. Tamilisai Soundararajan, personally inaugurate the vaccination programme and give a responsible public message on the eve of the event unlike Chief Minister KCR," said the BJP spokesperson.

He further said the BJP denounced the utter neglect, carelessness, and gross irresponsibility of KCR who was absent on day one of the world's largest vaccination programme.
