Nellore: Eight pilgrims, including three women, from Tamil Nadu were killed in a road accident in Andhra Pradesh's Nellore district in the early hours of 28 March when their speeding tempo hit a truck near a petrol bunk at Damaramadugu in Buchireddypalem mandal.

Fifteen pilgrims from Tamil Nadu who had completed their Srisailam visit were on their way to Nellore when the incident occurred. Seven others were injured in the accident and were admitted to a hospital.

The tempo driver and five others seated in the front seat died on the spot while two others succumbed while being shifted to the hospital. The front portion of the tempo was badly mangled in the collision. The police rushed to the scene and extricated the bodies and shifted the injured to the hospital.

The police suspect that the driver might may have fallen asleep at the wheel, leading to the accident. Poor visibility in the area is also believed to be the reason for the collision.

The police said they have registered a case for further investigations.
