Amaravati is Andhras capital as of date: Centre

Amaravati: Amid Jagan’s pitch for Vizag, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai told the parliament that Amaravati is the capital of Andhra Pradesh as of date. Rai was replying to a question raised by MP Vijayasai Reddy on the proposed three capitals in Rajya Sabha.

In a written reply, Rai said the Centre would not like to make any comment on the powers of the state government to decide on the three capitals, as the issue is sub-judice.

"In accordance with section 5 & 6 of the AP Reorganisation Act, the state government notified Amaravati as the capital in 2015. The Central government had constituted an expert committee to study the formation of the new capital city for Andhra Pradesh. The committee submitted its report, which subsequently decided to make Amaravati as the state capital", he said.

The state government has already enacted AP. Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA) (Repeal) Act, 2020, and the Andhra Pradesh Decentralization and Inclusive development of all regions (APDIDAR) Act, 2020. Under this, it has proposed three capitals: Amaravati as Legislative Capital, Visakhapatnam as Executive Capital, and Kurnool as Judicial Capital.

"The State government has not consulted the Centre while enacting the relevant Acts", the Union Minister clarified. Jagan announces Vizag as Capital:

On January 31, Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy announced that Visakhapatnam will be the new capital of Andhra Pradesh. He said that he will also soon shift to Vizag. It may be noted that the state government has filed a special leave petition in the Supreme Court against the High Court verdict on the capital matter, which is still pending.
