Andhra crime rate drops 6.17% in 2025; technology comes in handy for police to keep criminals at bay

Amaravati: Andhra Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Harish Kumar Gupta today said crime rate in the state has dropped by 6.17 percent in 2025.

Releasing the police performance report for 2025, the DGP said there has been notable progress in areas such as women’s safety, control of drug trafficking, and recovery of lost mobile phones.

Decrease in crime against women :

Crimes against women decreased to 16,347, as against 16,994 in the previous year. There has been a significant reduction in rape, gang rape, and murder, assault on women, and other crimes. POCSO Act cases dropped by 11%.

Regarding bodily offences, murder cases have declined to 856 as against 772 in 2024, and kidnap cases have come down to 645 from 768. Detection in property offences was 56% and the recovery was about 55% in 2025.

In a special drive, 1,262 missing girls and 2648 women were traced.

Cyber Frauds :

In Cyber fraud cases, 62,414 cases were registered, and the public lost about ₹815 crore. Police froze ₹98 crore in banks and refunded ₹3 crore to the victims of cyber offences.

Referring to cyber crimes, he said major gangs are operating from China, and money is transferred there immediately after fraud occurs, making refunds extremely difficult. He urged people to remain alert and cautious to avoid falling victim to such scams.

Narcotics cases decreased :

Narcotics cases declined to 1,727 this year, as against 1,875 in 2024. Police arrested 9,478 accused, seized 1,525 vehicles used for smuggling ganja and other drugs, and attached properties worth about ₹9.11 crore.

The Elite Anti-Narcotics Group for Law Enforcement (EAGLE), which stepped up on inter-state ganja peddling gangs operating, has destroyed 99,836 kg of ganja & 96.45 L of hashish oil.

EAGLE has set up 858 hotspots geo-tagged, 85 strategic checkpoints mapped, 40,000+ EAGLE Clubs, 19,400 awareness drives, 56 de-addiction centres operational statewide, and 10,029 police officers trained via EAGLE

The DGP reiterated that the police will continue to give top priority to women’s safety, control of marijuana trafficking, and overall crime prevention.

He said the police are increasingly using technology to further curb crime. DGP said a two-day workshop will be organised after the Sankranti festival, which will focus on strengthening structural engineering, technology, skill development, and other techniques. The workshop will focus on changes in police responsibilities and the adoption of new technologies to make modern policing more visible to the public.

Emphasising that everyone is equal before the law, the DGP warned that strict action would be taken against anyone who violates it. He added that the police have remained vigilant and have apprehended Maoists from time to time.
