Andhra districts see Mercury levels cross 45°C

Vijayawada: Temperatures in many parts of Andhra Pradesh crossed 45°Celsius and hot weather will continue in the state for the next two days.

On Tuesday, Ponnuru in Guntur recorded 46.6°Celsius, the highest temperature in Andhra Pradesh, followed by 46.8°C at Kaligiri in Palnadu, 46.7°C at Gopalapuram in East Godavari, and 46°C in Palnadu.

According to the Indian Meteorological Centre, Amaravati, a severe heatwave was seen over Kakinada, Yanam, West Godavari, and Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema districts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday. Krishna, Palnadu, Guntur, Bapatla, and Prakasam of south coastal Andhra Pradesh saw temperatures higher than 45°Celsius.

“For the next two days, heatwave is likely at isolated places over coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. Hot weather is likely in isolated places over Rayalaseema,” said the IMD weather report.

Heatwave is likely to be witnessed in isolated places over Kakinada, Yanam, West Godavari, East Godavari, Eluru and Dr B.R. Ambedkar Konaseema districts of north coastal Andhra Pradesh, NTR district, Krishna, Palnadu, Guntur, Bapatla, Prakasam and SPSR Nellore of south coastal Andhra Pradesh, and over Yanam.

According to Praneeth, popularly known as AP weatherman, “Intense heatwave is recorded than yesterday, and it is seen across all parts of Andhra Pradesh. Highest temperatures are recorded near Zarugumilli, Prakasam district and many parts of Eluru, NTR, Guntur, Krishna, and Anakapalli, which is close to 44-45 degree Celsius.”

2017 - 46.6°C

2020 - 46°C

All-time highest temperature was recorded on 11 May 2002, with 48.8°Celsius.

Hailstorms in Vizianagaram

After a very hot weather, recording 43°Celsius, the Vizianagaram district saw hailstorms and strong winds. Thunderstorm was witnessed in a few places at Visakhapatnam and Kothavalasa.


“Whenever there is high temperature in north Andhra belt, there will be sudden storms formed due to high atmospheric instability caused due to high cape index,” said Sai Kiran, popularly known as Vizag weathermen on Twitter.
