Vijayawada: In a sensational decision, the Andhra Pradesh High Court punished eight IAS officers on Thursday while hearing a contempt of court case related to a PIL (public interest litigation) on setting up ward and village secretariats in schools.
A petition was filed challenging the construction of ward and village secretariats in some of the government high schools in the state. In 2020, the court had ordered the removal of village secretariats in schools meant to run classes for children. Even after a year, no action was taken by the officers, and the petitioners submitted proof of secretariats being constructed there.
The eight include Vijaya Kumar, Shyamala Rao, Gopala Krishna Dwivedi, Buditi Rajasekhar, Girija Shankar, Chinna Veerabhadra, Srilakshmi, and M.M Nayak.
The court was outraged at the non-implementation of orders and ordered two weeks of imprisonment for the eight IAS officers. When the officers apologised, the High Court directed them to serve in welfare hostels for a year, carrying out activities every month. Also, the IAS officers are to bear one-day expenses of the court.
