Last year, Andhra Pradesh police had written to NCRB requesting to revise the report as incorrect figures were published due to mistakes committed by three units.
NCRB had said the number of cases registered against police personnel in 2019 was 1,681. However, the actual number was just 111.
NCRB-2020 figures reveal that 261 cases were registered against the policemen in Andhra Pradesh. It is the third state after Assam (2179) and Maharashtra (407) which has the highest cases registered against policemen in the country.
In Andhra Pradesh, 159 police personnel were arrested in 2020. Of the total 261 cases registered against the police personnel, courts quashed 10 and the charge sheets were filed in 70 others. Final reports were submitted in 17 cases. Court trials were completed against six police personnel and the six police personnel were acquitted by the courts in 2020.
Opposition parties said people have lost faith in police because they are allegedly acting as agents of the ruling YSR Congress Party.
Police are either conniving with the ruling party or ignoring the injustices occurring across the state. The NCRB numbers speak for themselves and reflect the functioning of the police in the state today, opposition leaders said.
