The defeat could not have come at a worse time for TDP chief Nara Chandrababu Naidu who had claimed to have done a lot in the region and made Amaravati the capital of the state.
Naidu has paid a high price for his hurtful statements against the people of Vijayawada and Guntur. Cashing in on his follies, YSRC won both Vijayawada and Guntur Municipal Corporations.
It may be recalled that Naidu lost his cool and took out all his frustration on the people during the roadshow in Vijayawada. Naidu accused people of being ever ready to migrate to a neighboring state in search of work but were least bothered to save Amaravati.
Naidu said that at least one person from every house should come forward to fight for the cause of continuing Amaravati as the state capital. "Amaravati is not for me. It's for the people. The people of Vijayawada should move ahead with a clear plan and fight for Amaravati. It is people's fight to save Amaravati," he said.
YSRC leader V Vijayasai Reddy said that people of Vijayawada and Guntur lost faith in Naidu for his self-proclaimed stories. "People are supporting the trifurcation of the capital and the urban voters also elected YSRC for its able and stable governance," he said.
Naidu, however, alleged YSRCP leaders attacked his party's workers to prevent free and fair elections.
