Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S Jagan Mohan Reddy on Sunday announced that the state government will bear the cost of treatment amounting to Rs. 1.5 crore for government doctor N. Bhaskar Rao who is battling for his life in Care Hospitals, Gachibowli.
Dr. N. Bhaskar Rao, 38, is a medical officer at Karamchedu PHC in Prakasam district. He tested positive for COVID-19. His wife, Dr. Bhagya laxmi (38) who is an assistant professor of radio diagnosis in Guntur Medical College, also tested positive for the virus. Both were admitted to GGH in Guntur on April 30.
Dr. Bhaskar Rao was admitted to Aayush hospital in Vijayawada on 3 May after his condition deteriorated. Later, he was shifted to Yashoda Hospital in Somajiguda on 9 May. A day later, he was out on a ventilator and then shifted to Care Hospitals in Gachibowli.
The doctors advised Dr. Bhaskar Rao to be put on ECMO (Extra corporeal membrane oxygenation) and that he undergo a lung transplant. However, the ailing doctor was unable to pay the Rs. 1.5 crore fee for the treatment.
Jagan came to know about the doctor's condition from minister Balineni Srinivasa Reddy. The CM directed officials to ensure that he gets good treatment and said the government will bear the cost of his treatment.
Andhra Pradesh Doctors' Association thanked the Chief Minister for his kind gesture. The Association general secretary, Dr. Pidakala Syamsundar, said the decision has given assurance to the government doctors in the state. They will work with more dedication and commitment in the fight against the pandemic, the doctor added.
