AP HC rejects stay on SEC decision to conduct local body elections in state

Vijayawada: In another jolt to the Andhra Pradesh government, the High Court on Thursday rejected the government's plea to issue a stay on the conduct of local body elections.

A few days ago, the AP government moved High Court challenging the statement by the State Election Commission (SEC) on holding local body elections in February. The state government said in its petition that the statement by the SEC is against the directions given by the Supreme Court and holding elections is not possible in February due to the pandemic by COVID-19.

The High Court on Thursday held a hearing in this regard and the advocate Ashwin Kumar argued on behalf of the SEC.

While hearing the arguments, public prosecutor (advocate for the AP government) expressed that the SEC had violated the orders of the Supreme Court to consult the state government on the conduct of the elections. He alleged that the Election Commission was acting unilaterally without consulting the state government and said that the election could not be held because of the ongoing pandemic.
